During a disaster having clean, pure drinking water might be hard to come by. Water services tend to hold out longer than gas, transportation, or electricity but water supplies can become compromised by breaking or flooding problems. Since you need about a gallon of water each day and can’t go more than a few without water having an emergency water supply is very important.
If you are a family of four to have a survival water storage that lasts a month, you will need at least 120 gallons of water which is quite a bit. A very common technique is to literally store the water in 55 gallon drums. These can hold water but must be treated with bleach and other chemicals to stop things from going in them. This technique does work but requires care. There are some techniques that you can use so you don’t have to store that much.
One option is to store as much as you can in your refrigerator and freezer. If there is any open space, use water containers. There is a two fold benefit to this. First, you have some stored water to drink. Second, they will help your refrigerated and frozen food keep cool when the power goes out.
If you know about the emergency before it happens, this is the time to fill up containers in your home as quick as possible. Twenty or thirty gallon tubs are very cheap and can be filled up quickly. Also use your bathtub, pitcher, cups, and anything else in your house.
Get some rain barrels so that you can catch water if it rains during the time you are without your city water supply. This must be filtered and purified but it will help.
Learn some wilderness survival water techniques. There are many ways of extracting water out of plants by using the sun’s heat. These will be valuable to put into practice especially if running low on water.
These techniques should realistically help you get through a thirty day period giving you plenty of water to drink.
