Damascus Knife

What is good about damascus steel knives?

True Damascus steel consists of alternating bands of very hard but brittle iron carbide or cementite and softer more flexible iron, the steel contains a small amount of vanadium, which also strengthens the blade.

The way it was made they became legendary because of their sharpness and strength, and were claimed to be able to cut through lesser quality swords and even rock.

Today’s “Damascus steel” is not true in the sense of the way it used to be made. Today’s is actually pattern welded steel or simply acid etched steel. And are physically no different, other than looks, than any other steel Knife produced.

If you were to get hold of a true Damascus Steel Knife you would:
a) pay a lot of cash for it
b) be holding a museum quality artifact
c) instantly see/feel the strength and quality

Hope that helps.

I wish you could comment to others without editing your answer but since you can’t…. Mountain Man you have no idea what you’re talking about. You cannot pick up TRUE Damascus Steel at any “rendezvous”. I challenge you to produce 1 place where you can get TRUE Damascus steel. And don’t go showing me the modern process of making it which I refered to in my answer.
