Custom Survival Knives

What is the best blade length and handle material for a survival Knife?

My grandpa makes custom knives. And he is offering to make me one. I don’t know very much about knives. I want to use it in the woods, and the desert. I don’t hunt so skinning animals isn’t really a must, but if im in a survival situation it would be nice to have that feature. He wants to know what kind of handle i want (Wood, bone, antler, plastic, steel, etc) and what length of a blade i want. And is having a serrated part of the knife a good feature? Knowing very little about knives i have no idea what to say. Help please?
thanks.

If there is one thing I learned in Boy Scouts, it’s how long the blade should be. When you lie the blade on your palm so that it’s perpendicular to your fingers, the whole blade shouldn’t be longer than the distance from the edge of your index finger to the edge of your pinkie finger. Here is a picture.

For the handle, it’s probably best to get a steel handle for strength and balance.
