Automatic Knives

Posted by admin on December 2, 2000

Automatic KnivesSwitchblade and Automatic or “Assisted” Knives

There are two basic types of automatic knives. The first is the OTF or “Out of the Front” type, also known as a switchblade knife because the blade shoots or pops out from the front end of the case. The other type is the folding knife, otherwise known as a side opening knife because the blade leaves from the side of the case.

The purpose of an automatic knife is to respond quickly at the touch of a button, which is usually located on the side of the knife.

Examples of these are switchblades and stiletto knives. Older versions of these knives are highly collectible and some command exceptionally high prices within the collector market. However, before you start to collect automatic knives, you should first learn as much as possible about the different features of each type. Check out the different ways of opening the knife and determine which type or types you would like to include in your collection. Some knives provide a side button that forces the blade forward, while others come with a release that pushes down on the side of the blade allowing it to come out.

You also need to decide on an era and location for your collection. There are several companies from around the world who make these types of unique knives, and many collectors only buy from these certain areas. For example, a vintage stiletto knife from Italy is one that would be quite popular with collectors.

Also, you should determine how you want to display your collection. You might prefer to store away most of your automatic knives and just put a few of your favorites out for display. Using specifically designed boxes for your knives not only protects your investment but allows you to display them properly as well.

You can also join knife collectors clubs who hold annual events and other meetings for it’s members. You’ll usually have access to group newsletter with information on new automatic knives coming out on the market plus certain limited edition knives and other upcoming events. Not to mention you can meet and even make friends with a lot of other collectors with similar interests.

You may also want to consider adding some limited edition knives to your collection, like the ones that are released in small batches once a year. These knives typically hold their value better than mass-produced knives and usually always go up in value within a few years. And, by all means, keep that valuable knife collection in a safe place and always away from small children.

Lastly, please make sure you know and understand the laws in your state that govern automatic knives before you make a certain purchase. States such as Ohio for example, make it illegal to sell, purchase or own a switchblade knife.
